Saturday 29th December 2001
Weather: Sunny & cold
Today's Walk: Skelton - Saltburn ( 2½ miles )

A pair of Canada
Geese on the pond at Skelton (Grid Ref: 657 196) where we start
our walk
- if it's the same pair, they raised a new family here last
summer

A short stroll across a field and we join the path of the long-distance Cleveland Way

We follow the Cleveland Way through Crow Wood, passing under the massive arches of the railway viaduct...

...and then about ½ a mile further on we get a good view down to the Italian Gardens at Saltburn
.
This footbridge is quite a recent structure - the previous one was badly damaged in the Autumn Floods of 2000
.
This is the old
engine shed for the miniature railway - a new one has just been
built across the beck,
again due to the damage done to a bridge during the floods

On reaching the shore we admire a couple of canoeists braving the cold, rough North Sea

Saltburn Pier - recently strengthened with the help of a National Lottery Grant

Looking east under the pier towards Hunt Cliff and The Ship Inn
.
The pier buildings
and the bottom of the cliff-lift
A few days previously, we'd visited Saltburn in the car when the sea was much calmer

That day, there were more people enjoying a stroll along the beach...

...and on the pier
.
We joined them for a short while...

...the pier is looking very smart - the lottery money has been well spent
The houses and
hotels at the top of the cliff were built in the Victorian era
when the introduction of a railway
link to these parts brought a boom in tourism to Saltburn By the
Sea
.
The calm seas were ideal for the local fishermen...

...and for those wishing to enjoy a walk along the beach finishing with a pint in The Ship
